The invisible infrastructure of global connectivity

The Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) is one of the most powerful regional submarine cable systems in Asia. It connects nine countries and territories from Japan via South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand to Malaysia and Singapore. With 54.8 Tbit/s design capacity and six fiber pairs, APG offered 20 times the capacity of its main predecessor in the region when it went live in October 2016. APG is the backbone for intra-Asian data traffic and provides a critical routing alternative for countries such as Vietnam, which were previously regularly affected by cable failures on older systems. A 12-member consortium with Meta, NTT, China Mobile and other Tier 1 carriers is supporting the system.

Route & connection

APG connects Shima (Japan) and Busan (South Korea) with Chongming and Nanhui (China), Toucheng (Taiwan), Tseung Kwan O (Hong Kong), Da Nang (Vietnam), Songkhla (Thailand), Kuantan (Malaysia) and Singapore. In total, the system comprises eleven Kabellande stations in nine countries and territories. The total length is around 10,400 kilometers.

Technology & capacity

APG was supplied entirely by NEC Corporation and has six fiber pairs with DWDM transmission technology.

  • 6 fiber pairs: 54.8 Tbps design capacity (128 × 40 Gbps, upgradeable to 100 Gbps per wavelength)
  • NEC as sole supplier: complete end-to-end system responsibility by one supplier
  • 20 times the capacity of AAG: massive leap for Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia
  • Critical route redundancy: direct Japan-Southeast Asia connection without risky North Pacific route

Provider Overview

SAVECALL as access to APG

APG is the central backbone system for companies with APAC locations in South East Asia and North Asia, a consortium system with twelve international members that requires direct market knowledge.
