SD-WAN: Connecting your locations in China

With SD-WAN to China, you can connect your company to locations in the Middle Kingdom. You benefit both from the advantages of the technology itself and from bypassing the Great Firewall. Thanks to our exclusive partnership with China Telecom, we avoid the VPN problem – despite our own encryption!

In a nutshell:

Problem: Conventional VPN connections to China are often unstable or blocked – which significantly impairs communication, applications and data access.
Solution: With SD-WAN via our partnership with China Telecom, you avoid the firewall problem, secure your connection and benefit from stable, high-performance Site Connectivity.

We advise you on the selection and implementation of SD-WAN solutions. Our experts have many years of experience in analyzing your requirements and comparing different technologies to find the best solution for optimizing your network connections.

Explained by experts:

SD-WAN to China-how it works

SD-WAN is a software-controlled overlay network that bundles existing infrastructures such as Internet, MPLS, xDSL or 5G and controls them globally in an automated manner. It enables sites and servers – including those in China – to be connected to clouds and local breakouts in Europe, Hong Kong and mainland China, bypassing the Great Firewall. The technology offers more bandwidth, lower infrastructure costs and greater reliability.

The technology is available in three versions:

The SD-WAN link is based on local or existing internet lines and is suitable for cloud connections, temporary connections and flexible network combinations. Encryption takes place within the network, and a separate encryption can also be used – without the need to deposit keys with Chinese authorities. The delivery time is around two to three weeks from ordering.

SD-WAN with cloud gateways

SD-WAN end devices are deployed at all customer locations and connected to the cloud gateways via IP-Sec tunnels.

Each cloud gateway is directly connected to China-Telecom’s low latency backbone and thus to all major cloud providers inside and outside China. This allows your users in China to access global services.

Hybrid WAN: Traditional router (CPE) is replaced by SD-WAN Box (CAE)

Allows to manage internet based IP-Sec tunnels as well as MPLS traffic for critical applications via orchestrator.

Hybrid WAN: Network expansion with SD-WAN

Data traffic in the existing MPLS network is handled separately as before, but an IP-SEC tunnel is integrated as a backup.

Customers keep their existing MPLS routers for business-critical traffic. Non-critical traffic is routed over the Internet via SD-WAN. Expensive bandwidth increases in the MPLS can thus be avoided.

Fully meshed cloud-centric WAN via Vcae

Suitable for companies that need the best connections to cloud services such as Amazon or AWS.

One CAE is installed in the branch office and one on China Telecom’s virtual cloud platform. Now a direct IP-Sec tunnel is established without passing through a cloud gateway.

SaaS platform acceleration

On-demand access to O365, Salesforce, etc. In this topology, the IP-Sec tunnel can be provided via SD-WAN CAE boxes in China to reach the China Telecom Cloud gateway, or the customer can also access the China Telecom Cloud from international locations.

From the China Telecom Cloud, there is then access to O365, Salesforce etc….

Remote SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) – access via mobile devices

Our SD-WAN solution can be used to support mobile access to SaaS sites.

Mobile devices can be connected to the China Telecom Cloud Gateway via an IP-Sec tunnel (Layer2 Protocol or SSL-VPN).

From there, the mobile device can be connected to the international SaaS locations.

Our solution

The Chinese government is increasingly taking action against VPN services and is obliging telecommunications providers such as China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom to prevent their use. This closes the last gaps in the Great Firewall and shuts down existing VPN connections. The aim is to censor unwanted content, for example by blocking global websites such as Google, Amazon or social media such as Facebook and YouTube.

Foreign companies are now also affected, which is why a legal, stable and secure alternative is needed. Together with local partners, Savecall offers a certified SD-WAN solution for China that is not affected by the shutdowns. It represents a future-proof alternative to traditional IPSec VPNs.

Keep an eye on technological differences, costs & features

SD-WAN providers differ greatly in terms of price, usability, performance and additional options such as IP telephony. A structured comparison not only helps to find the best solution – it often enables considerable cost savings compared to traditional WAN technologies.

What is important:

Variants and connections

With this technology, you can decide how you want to divide up the global transfer of your data. Send non-critical applications via a secure tunnel over the Internet and sensitive data via MPLS. Unlike other WAN connections, cloud networking is also flexible and secure. As an overlay network, SD-WAN technology offers you a number of useful management functions:

Whether you operate an SD-WAN mono with Internet lines or hybrid with MPLS. – You are in control. All performance and application information is available to you at all times. This enables you to localize and rectify faults and impairments yourself. You can make changes and settings via the portal, which are implemented immediately. All important functions are included: SD-WAN router, firewall, performance monitoring, WAN management or WAN accelerator.
