Explained by experts:
SD-WAN to China-how it works
SD-WAN is a software-controlled overlay network that bundles existing infrastructures such as Internet, MPLS, xDSL or 5G and controls them globally in an automated manner. It enables sites and servers – including those in China – to be connected to clouds and local breakouts in Europe, Hong Kong and mainland China, bypassing the Great Firewall. The technology offers more bandwidth, lower infrastructure costs and greater reliability.
The technology is available in three versions:
The SD-WAN link is based on local or existing internet lines and is suitable for cloud connections, temporary connections and flexible network combinations. Encryption takes place within the network, and a separate encryption can also be used – without the need to deposit keys with Chinese authorities. The delivery time is around two to three weeks from ordering.

SD-WAN with cloud gateways
Hybrid WAN: Traditional router (CPE) is replaced by SD-WAN Box (CAE)

Allows to manage internet based IP-Sec tunnels as well as MPLS traffic for critical applications via orchestrator.
Policy-based routing and load-balancing between MPLS and IP-Sec connections for maximum availability and bandwidth.
Hybrid WAN: Network expansion with SD-WAN
Fully meshed cloud-centric WAN via Vcae

Suitable for companies that need the best connections to cloud services such as Amazon or AWS.
One CAE is installed in the branch office and one on China Telecom’s virtual cloud platform. Now a direct IP-Sec tunnel is established without passing through a cloud gateway.
SaaS platform acceleration
Remote SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) – access via mobile devices

Our SD-WAN solution can be used to support mobile access to SaaS sites.
Mobile devices can be connected to the China Telecom Cloud Gateway via an IP-Sec tunnel (Layer2 Protocol or SSL-VPN).
From there, the mobile device can be connected to the international SaaS locations.

SD-WAN-China – FAQs
SD-WAN China is a variant of SD-WAN specifically developed for the Chinese market, compatible with the Great Firewall, local regulations and ICP licensing requirements. Standard SD-WAN solutions often do not work reliably in China: internet tunnels are throttled, VPN connections are shut down, or latency from abroad is too high. SD-WAN China uses locally licensed carriers such as China Telecom with their own cloud gateways inside and outside China. This enables legal, high-performance and stable connectivity to your Chinese sites without VPN bans or performance drops.
The Great Firewall of China increasingly detects and throttles private VPN tunnels aggressively. Connections are slowed, interrupted or fully blocked, especially with standard protocols such as OpenVPN or IPSec. Legal risks add to this: non-licensed VPN services are illegal in China and can result in penalties for employees or companies. Performance is also an issue: latency from Europe to China typically ranges from 200 to 400 ms, rendering many applications unusable. SD-WAN China solves both through licensed carriers and cloud gateways directly inside China.
SAVECALL is an exclusive partner of China Telecom for tailor-made SD-WAN China solutions with guaranteed performance values: less than 200 ms latency, less than 1 percent packet loss, no VPN shutdowns and proprietary encryption without key escrow. The solution is fully compliant with Chinese telecommunications licensing requirements. Provisioning time is typically only 2 to 3 weeks. This way, companies avoid the risks of classic VPN solutions and can reliably connect China sites to their global IT infrastructure.
SD-WAN China is worthwhile for all companies with sites, production facilities or sales offices in China that need reliable access to global IT systems such as ERP, CRM, Microsoft 365 or SAP. Typical use cases are video conferencing between China and HQ, cloud applications with European servers, remote maintenance of production machines, database synchronisation and VoIP telephony. The solution is also relevant for companies with Chinese customers, those expanding into the China market or working with Chinese suppliers.
Costs consist of the China Telecom connection, SD-WAN service and optionally cloud gateways. A typical site with standard bandwidth ranges from 1,000 to 2,500 euros monthly, depending on bandwidth, connection type and SLA. Variants include connectivity via internet, MPLS or hybrid, cloud gateways for SaaS acceleration, remote SaaS for Microsoft 365 and cloud-centric WAN for mixed requirements. Through the SAVECALL procurement pool you secure below-market conditions. Exact pricing is calculated in the initial conversation.
Thanks to the exclusive China Telecom partnership, typical provisioning time is only 2 to 3 weeks from contract signing. That is significantly faster than classic MPLS connections to China, which usually take 3 to 6 months. For hybrid setups with additional cloud gateways or multi-site rollouts, plan 4 to 8 weeks. SAVECALL handles complete project management, carrier coordination with China Telecom, cloud gateway configuration and user training. You have a single point of contact for the entire solution.
