Data center relocation at a glance

    Factors, challenges and first steps

Relocating a data center is no easy task. Many factors need to be taken into account and can prevent a smooth and punctual move. The person responsible for the move must take into account disruptions to business operations, backups, problems with the power supply and possible data loss. It is therefore essential to prepare contingency plans to be prepared for a worst-case scenario. It is not uncommon for a move to be required within a 24×7 scenario – in such cases, the requirements are particularly high. It is not uncommon for such a move to be carried out in individual steps

The planning required for the data center relocation should primarily include an inventory, analysis, migration plan and risk management.

    Basic consideration / strategic approach

In the first step, strategic approaches should play a central role. Housing or hosting. What role do security requirements play – what kind of redundancy must be provided? In-house operation or a managed environment with a provider. Last but not least, the question of vitalization should also play an important role.

Inventory for the data center relocation

In the second step, a complete inventory and analysis of the existing infrastructure and data structure should be carried out, also taking into account space requirements, cabling, necessary security packages, etc.. Both hardware and software should be listed. For the data structure, it is necessary to view all stored data and organize it according to relevance. This is also the right time to recalculate the resources and adjust quantities accordingly as part of capacity management.

Once this has been done, you can analyze whether all existing structures are necessary and whether there are opportunities to make savings or whether you need to expand.

Planning for the data center relocation

As a first step, it is advisable to analyze the risks associated with moving a data center. A downtime can have a major impact on the company or individual departments. They should therefore be able to prioritize which functions need to be started and with what priority when the move takes place.

For the transitional period, information pages may have to be placed on which the downtime is announced – so as not to give the impression of an unplanned incident.

In addition, they can draw up a detailed migration plan that also takes into account the risks and involves external service providers (e.g. the relocation company). Caution is required here, as there are often complex dependencies between data storage and business-critical applications.

Moving a data center is a risky and difficult process. Only a few precautions have been mentioned above, which by no means account for the full extent of the risks.
