The Southeast Asia-Japan Cable System (SJC) is a high-capacity cable that connects Japan directly with Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Brunei and China. It was deliberately routed across the Philippine Sea to avoid the earthquake-prone zones north of the Philippines. The route is considered one of the most resilient intra-Asian connections. With six fiber pairs and 28 Tbit/s capacity, SJC offers a direct low-latency connection between Japan and the Southeast Asian region. At the Japanese landing point Chikura, SJC is directly connected to the transatlantic Unity cable, which enables particularly low latencies on the Singapore-Los Angeles route

SJC connects Chikura (Japan) with Shantou (China), Chung Hom Kok (Hong Kong), Nasugbu/Batangas (Philippines), Telisai (Brunei) and Tuas (Singapore) as well as an optional extension to Songkhla (Thailand). The basic configuration comprises seven cable landing stations in six countries. The system length is 8,900 kilometers (with Thailand extension up to 10,700 km).

What is the SJC cable?
SJC (Southeast Asia-Japan Cable) is an intra-Asian submarine cable connecting Chikura in Japan with Shantou (China), Chung Hom Kok (Hong Kong), Nasugbu (Philippines), Telisai (Brunei) and Tuas (Singapore), with an optional extension to Songkhla in Thailand. The cable spans 8,900 kilometers and entered service on June 27, 2013. Across six fiber pairs, SJC reaches a design capacity of 28 Tbit/s. It was jointly built by TE SubCom and NEC, and is funded and operated by a broad consortium comprising Globe Telecom, Google, KDDI, Telkom Indonesia, SingTel, China Telecom, TOT, China Mobile, Chunghwa Telecom (via subsidiary Donghwa Telecom) and Brunei International Gateway (BIG). The deliberate routing across the Philippine Sea avoids seismically active zones, making SJC one of the most resilient intra-Asian connections.

SJC is a good fit for a proven, earthquake-resistant route with direct US connectivity via Unity, APG offers broader North Asia-Southeast Asia coverage with higher capacity, and SJC2 currently provides the highest capacity of the three systems. Genuine redundancy only exists when the chosen cables use different landing points and physically separate routes, for example combining SJC with APG or SJC2. Since all three systems connect some of the same countries, companies should carefully examine the actual physical routing and landing stations used.
