SIP Trunk – telephony solution

From ISDN to SIP: modern telephony explained simply
1. SIP Trunk vs. SIP Account
- With SIP trunks, you can manage direct dial number blocks with your IP system.
- A SIP account, on the other hand, only assigns individual phone numbers to the extensions, not a complete block of phone numbers.
2. replacement of classic connections
- SIP trunks replace direct-dial capable system connections (e.g. S0 AnAs, S2M PMX).
- SIP accounts replace the classic ISDN multi-device connections (no analog services).
3. billing and tariff models
- Your telephone number remains assigned to a provider as before.
- Depending on the provider, billing is based on a per-minute or flat-rate model.
4 The decisive difference to ISDN
With SIP trunks, telephony runs directly over the existing data line, making it more flexible, cheaper and future-proof.
With classic ISDN connections, a separate voice line was necessary.

What does SIP Trunk cost?
SIP trunks are significantly cheaper than traditional connections.
While a system connection (for 2 simultaneous calls) costs from approx. 18€ per month, a SIP trunk costs only approx. 0.99€ per month.
However, this is only half the truth. You will certainly need more than one channel and the providers offer different solutions here. Depending on the model, you can get your SIP trunks in packages (i.e. in increments of 10 or 50) or only in conjunction with data lines.
It is difficult to make a general statement about the costs of sip trunks. The following points should be defined in order to be able to make a valid statement about suitable providers and conditions: Number of channels, encryption, contract term, tariff model.
Provider of SIP trunk solutions
SIP trunks have completely shaken up the traditional telephony market. In addition to top dogs such as Deutsche Telekom, Colt, Plusnet, Vodafone and others, a number of new, major international providers have joined the market and are setting new benchmarks in the field of innovative UCC solutions, UX, All IP and cloud telephone systems.
A comparison is worthwhile. There are major differences in terms of costs, SLAs, additional options and bundled products.

SIP Trunk – FAQs
A SIP trunk (Session Initiation Protocol) is an IP-based connection between a phone system and a telecommunications provider that enables telephony over the internet. Instead of analogue or ISDN lines, voice packets are transmitted digitally over IP networks. A SIP trunk replaces classic landline connections and supports multiple parallel calls depending on the number of channels booked. It is the foundation for cloud phone systems, Direct Routing in Microsoft Teams and modern UCaaS platforms.
ISDN is the classic digital landline technology with physical lines and fixed channel counts (S0 with 2 channels, S2M with 30 channels). SIP trunks run entirely over IP, are more flexible in channel scaling and support modern features such as HD voice, video calls and integration with cloud services. ISDN has been phased out in Germany since 2018, with full retirement planned by 2030. Companies should switch to SIP now at the latest, as ISDN contracts are no longer being renewed and repairs are becoming difficult.
SIP trunk tariffs consist of monthly base fees and connection charges. A typical SIP trunk with 10 channels and a flat rate to the German landline costs 30 to 80 euros monthly. Larger setups with 30 channels and international flat rates range from 100 to 300 euros. Pay-per-minute models start at around 0.8 cents per minute to the German landline. Through the SAVECALL procurement pool, you secure conditions 15 to 30 percent below list price.
Leading providers in Germany are Deutsche Telekom (DeutschlandLAN SIP Trunk), Vodafone, Colt, Placetel, NFON, sipgate, Toplink and ecotel. International providers such as Twilio or Voxbone are relevant for global setups. Each provider has strengths: Telekom and Vodafone for corporate customers with high volume, Placetel and sipgate for SME setups, Colt for internationally operating companies. SAVECALL compares over 80 carriers carrier-independently and delivers an objective selection based on sites, channel count and service level.
SIP trunks can be secured with TLS encryption for signalling and SRTP for voice transmission, so calls are end-to-end encrypted. Risks usually do not arise from the SIP trunk itself, but from poorly configured session border controllers, insecure endpoints or missing firewall rules. SAVECALL implements SIP trunks with standard hardening, secure authentication and optional SBC integration. For critical setups we additionally recommend SASE or zero trust concepts for the voice connection.
A standard SIP trunk setup is productive within 2 to 4 weeks, provided an existing phone system or cloud solution is SIP-capable. For full ISDN replacement with number porting, it takes 4 to 8 weeks due to statutory porting deadlines. For complex multi-site setups with carrier change and SBC integration, plan 8 to 12 weeks. SAVECALL handles requirements analysis, provider selection, porting, configuration and training end-to-end.
