What is the AAE-1 cable?
AAE-1 (Asia Africa Europe 1) is a submarine cable spanning around 25,000 kilometers that connects Hong Kong and Vietnam in the east, via Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East and North Africa, with Greece, Italy and France in the west. The cable entered service in June 2017 and reaches a design capacity of at least 40 Tbit/s across five fiber pairs using 100G technology. It was built by SubCom for the France-to-Thailand segment and NEC for the Thailand-to-Hong Kong segment, and is funded and operated by a broad consortium of 18 telecommunications companies, including China Unicom, Etisalat, Mobily, Ooredoo, PCCW, Reliance Jio, Telecom Egypt and Viettel. At launch, AAE-1 was the longest newly built submarine cable in over a decade.

The system has since been upgraded several times, including with Infinera ICE6 technology in 2022, significantly increasing available capacity beyond the original design value.

This mainly depends on the landing points and capacity you need. AAE-1 offers the broadest country coverage on an established route since 2017, 2Africa provides by far the highest capacity and additional African landing points, and Africa-1 offers a physically separate alternative on the Middle East-Europe segment. Combining several systems is often the better choice to ensure genuine redundancy. SAVECALL advises on the right combination on a vendor-neutral basis.
Genuine redundancy only exists when the chosen cables use different landing points, operators and physically separate routes, for example combining AAE-1 with 2Africa or Africa-1. Since several cables on this route pass through similar geographic chokepoints such as the Red Sea or the Persian Gulf, companies should carefully examine the actual physical routing.
