An underlay is the physical internet or leased line connection at a business site that serves as foundation for all services running on top: cloud applications such as Microsoft 365, AWS or SAP, VoIP telephony, video conferencing, multi-site connectivity, backup, SD-WAN and SASE. The quality of the underlay significantly determines the performance, uptime and user experience of all applications running on top. A high-quality underlay is symmetric in upload and download, has a defined SLA and uses multiple parallel lines for resilience.
The most important underlay technologies are business fibre for highest bandwidth and performance, leased lines with dedicated SLA and symmetric bandwidth, SDSL as a copper-based variant for older sites or smaller bandwidths, wireless point-to-point as a fast alternative without civil works where line of sight exists, and LTE or 5G as backup or initial access in rural regions. In modern setups, several technologies are deliberately combined per site, for example fibre primary plus mobile backup, to maximise resilience and performance.
Through the SAVECALL procurement pool, businesses typically save up to 20 percent compared to directly negotiated conditions. Costs depend strongly on bandwidth, technology and availability at the site. Business fibre with 100 Mbit/s symmetric starts at 100 to 250 euros monthly, 1 Gbit/s ranges from 400 to 1,500 euros. SDSL costs 200 to 600 euros depending on bandwidth. LTE or 5G as backup starts at 30 to 100 euros. Leased lines with dedicated SLA range from 500 to 4,000 euros depending on bandwidth. For critical sites, plan two lines from different carriers. Concrete pricing in the initial conversation.
Multiple underlays per site dramatically increase uptime. If one line fails, a second takes over, ideally from a different carrier and via a different technology. This covers carrier outages, civil works and local incidents. Classic combinations are fibre + LTE backup, dual fibre from different carriers or fibre + wireless point-to-point at critical sites. With SD-WAN or SASE setups, both lines can be used actively in parallel and available bandwidth can be doubled.
LTE and 5G are productive within days. SDSL is available in 4 to 8 weeks. Fibre typically takes 8 to 16 weeks depending on in-house wiring and possible civil works. For complex sites with permit procedures or building connection works, 4 to 9 months are realistic. For fast rollouts, we recommend LTE or 5G as initial connection, later supplemented or replaced by fibre.
