MPLS Connectivity
Price and availability check
Safe. Reliable. Scalable.
Fast, reliable and intelligent network
Do you run a company with several locations that require a secure connection with guaranteed bandwidth and high service level agreements (SLAs)? Then an MPLS network is a good solution. With Multiprotocol Label Switching, you can connect your company locations to form an integrated company network – a virtual private network outside the Internet (VPN). For fast and efficient communication.
The principle is very simple for you: you buy an SLA and do not have to worry about managing the network and the underlying lines. Routes are predefined in the network and largely fixed, and access to a cloud is blocked. The MPLS routers monitor compliance.
Due to the competitive situation with SD-WAN, the prices for MPLS networks have fallen sharply. Depending on requirements, this makes them an interesting network solution for medium-sized companies – even with local access (breakout) to the cloud.
The advantages of MPLS in a nutshell:
MPLS enables your company to transfer data faster and more securely. It is also more cost-efficient than conventional networks.

The most important advantages of an MPLS solution
Quality of service (QoS)
Important applications that require high availability are given higher priority than less important applications.
Security
Data packets are routed based on their labels and not their IP addresses. This makes it more difficult to manipulate traffic.
Scalability
MPLS makes it possible to manage and scale large networks with many locations and connections without compromising performance.
Integrated Internet access
Various services are provided via the same network. This makes it possible to respond more flexibly to the needs of the company.
Compatibility
MPLS is compatible with many network protocols and devices. This makes it easier to integrate into existing networks.
Redundancy
High network availability by providing multiple paths for data traffic.
Provider overview
MPLS: Additional features
1
Class of Service
Depending on the provider, several service classes with defined bandwidths can be defined within a predefined prioritization profile. The respective service classes behave flexibly:
If one is overloaded, it can borrow free capacity from others.
This provides end-to-end bandwidth protection across the entire MPLS network, which stabilizes essential or time-critical data and limits less important packets.
2
Application-aware network
Application-aware-Network visualizes network-internal applications, which optimizes and accelerates work processes. A fixed bandwidth allocation in the MPLS line prioritizes a business-critical package so that productive work is guaranteed.
- Guaranteed application performance
- WAN investments are aligned with corporate goals
- It defines the importance and minimum quality criteria of the application classes
- Business applications are accelerated, network costs are reduced and productivity is increased
3
Central access to the Internet
An MPLS network is self-contained within another network. There are two ways to grant it access to the public Internet:
central Internet access or a dedicated firewall. The primary access is provided by the provider in its data center with a central firewall system.
- Availability of the Internet line
- Management of the firewall is outsourced
- Low data center costs for high bandwidths

What does MPLS cost?
MPLS offers an efficient way to network locations securely and scalably, with “Quality of Service” and “Class of Service” guaranteeing quality and class, which enables interference-free transmission of time-critical applications such as VoIP or video in the network.
However, the cost of MPLS can vary greatly depending on location, provider and other factors. It is therefore difficult to give a clear MPLS price, so use our provider-neutral availability check with a non-binding price overview for each provider.
The costs for an MPLS connection are between €300.00 and €4,000.00.
The price of MPLS depends on various factors:
- Transmission speed and bandwidth quality
- Integrated services such as QoS or VPN
- Number and location of sites
- MPLS provider
How to find the right MPLS
Which MPLS provider is the right one for my company? The comparison is worthwhile:
Differences exist primarily with regard to QoS, SLAs, back-up options and availability of the expanded network.
MPLS security
In addition to high transmission quality and faster transmission of data packets, MPLS guarantees a high level of security in particular.
Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is primarily the routing of data via the provider’s systems or its cooperation partners.
As the data flow via the labels follows a predetermined path and no routing decisions have to be made, MPLS connections can be classified as higher quality than Internet connections.
The nodes of an MPLS network are invisible and closed to the outside world. The data is transmitted in a virtual tunnel(VPN).
To ensure sufficient MPLS security, additional encryption is required.
Measures for securing MPLS networks
Reliability of connected MPLS carriers:
Customers who connect their foreign locations via MPLS VPN must be able to rely not only on the national MPLS provider, but also on the international MPLS partner provider(s) involved.
The customer usually only enters into contractual relationships with the national MPLS provider. A detailed review of the solutions / variants used by the partner carriers is strongly recommended.
Prevent MPLS label spoofing:
The incoming network nodes of the MPLS core (PE router or Ingress LSR) must block labeled MPLS packets as soon as they enter the network via a CE-PE connection or originate from an untrusted router.
This MPLS security measure is achieved by the manufacturer through secure programming.
Use of network monitoring systems:
Network monitoring systems, usually as part of a network management system (NMS), must be used. These should monitor the integrity of the MPLS VPN on the customer side and on the service provider side. The customer information should not be sent directly from the CE to the customer (e.g. via SNMP or NetFlow), but should be provided via a customer portal.
Secure protocols should be used for network management. In particular, the use of Telnet should be avoided in this environment in favor of encrypted alternatives (SSH). SNMPv3 should be used in a secure form to ensure sufficient MPLS security.
Prevent MPLS label spoofing:
A central transition to the Internet can be provided for customers in the MPLS core. The transition can be configured in various ways, particularly with regard to routing.
Internet routes should be provided within a dedicated MPLS VPN via dedicated VRF instances on the PE routers for Internet customers. These PE routers should be connected exclusively to Internet CEs.
Other customer VPN CEs should not be connected directly to the Internet PE.
Redundancy for maximum availability of MPLS networks:
The failure or partial failure of the MPLS provider network usually has a considerable impact. Depending on availability requirements, failover can be achieved by using redundant network architectures.
This MPLS security measure is achieved by the manufacturer through secure programming.
Use of IPSec tunnels via MPLS connections:
By using encrypted tunnel technologies such as IPSec, TLS/SSL or SSH, a customer can secure the integrity and confidentiality of their VPN.
The use of site-to-site encryption, for example with the help of IPSec, enables the customer to protect the confidentiality of data transmitted via the MPLS network against potential attackers in the man-in-the-middle position.
The IPSec tunnels are usually set up between the CE and CE of two customer sites. Alternatively, downstream security gateways or VPN concentrators can also be used for this purpose, which are under the sole control of the customer. In this way, increased protection against possible attacks by provider personnel can be achieved.

Probably the most elegant solution for MPLS security comes from Cisco:
MPLS providers such as Colt & Vodafone rely on Cisco’s GET (Group Encrypted Transport) technology.
The GET VPN submitted by Cisco as RFC 3547 enables scalable any-to-any connectivity: in this process, only the payload is encrypted, the header remains unencrypted. In addition to QoS (Quality of Service), this also enables multicasting with secure traffic. As a server takes over the key management, a user only has to log in to one group. There is no need to set up individual point-to-point tunnels; encryption takes place in the cloud.

Provider selection

How do you choose the best MPLS provider?
In Germany, there are several providers of MPLS services that support companies in providing a reliable network infrastructure. The availability of MPLS depends on the geographical location and the individual requirements of a company. MPLS availability varies depending on location and infrastructure.
MPLS services are generally readily available in large cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt . Companies that are based or have sites in these cities can benefit from the high MPLS availability . In addition, the costs for MPLS are often lower in metropolitan areas than in rural areas.
Large telecommunications providers:
The major telecommunications providers such as Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica offer MPLS services for companies throughout Germany. They have an extensive network and offer high MPLS availability.
Regional providers:
In addition to the major telecommunications providers, there are also regional providers that offer MPLS services in specific areas. Depending on your individual requirements, these providers can be a good alternative.
