What is the Equiano cable?

Equiano is a submarine cable system spanning around 15,000 kilometers, financed and operated by Google, that has connected Portugal directly with West Africa and South Africa since September 2022. Named after the Nigerian-British abolitionist Olaudah Equiano, the system was one of the first hyperscaler-owned cables on the African route. With 12 fiber pairs based on space division multiplexing (SDM), Equiano reaches a design capacity of 144 Tbit/s, around 20 times the capacity of the previously newest cable system on this route. The system was built by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN).

Equiano uses state-of-the-art fiber optic technology and is designed for a capacity of up to 144 Tbit/s, which exceeds the capacity of existing cable systems on the African route many times over. Essentially, these are the technological features:
