Ethernet VPN: Maximum security
Introduction & basics
Ethernet VPN is an efficient way to network company locations with each other. More and more companies are relying on Ethernet-based WAN networks (Wide Area Networks). Ethernet is considered a future-proof technology with numerous advantages.
Thanks to standardized interfaces, implementation and costs are low. As LANs are based on Ethernet anyway, they can be easily extended into the WAN. Routers for the transfer via RJ45 are usually already available – there are no additional hardware costs.
Compared to traditional leased lines, Ethernet connections offer higher bandwidths at more favorable conditions, flexible customization options and simplified network administration.
Advantages of VPN in a nutshell:
- High scalability: bandwidth can be flexibly increased at any time – without having to replace expensive routers
- High security: maximum security via dedicated lines with optional additional encryption
- High availability: availability of 99.0%, expandable to up to 99.999% with bindingly defined SLAs

Functionality & possible applications
Ethernet VPN combines Ethernet leased lines with Layer 2 VPN services. This allows geographically separated locations to communicate with each other as if they were on the same LAN.
In addition to branch offices, home offices and mobile field staff can also be easily integrated. Connectivity can be flexibly implemented as any-to-any or hub & spoke. The bandwidth can be scaled in small steps from 2 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s.
Security & availability
For security reasons, an Ethernet VPN is not connected to the public Internet. This separation provides reliable protection against external attacks. If Internet access is required, the connection is made centrally via an uplink with a firewall and security policy.
Individual SLAs (Service Level Agreements) can be used to ensure availability of up to 99.998%. Measures such as
- Redundant power supply and house feeds
- Different routing via several POP locations of the carrier
- Use of different media (fiber optics and copper)
- Multi-carrier strategies
