SMW-4 has been in operation since December 2005. The system is operated by a consortium of 16 telecommunications companies, including Etisalat, Saudi Telecom Company, Tata Communications, Singtel and Telecom Egypt. SMW-4 was built by Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN) and Fujitsu at a construction cost of around 500 million US dollars.
It depends on your capacity and redundancy strategy. SMW-4 offers the widest, long-established landing point coverage on the route. SEA-ME-WE 5 is the direct successor with significantly higher capacity. AAE-1 additionally connects Hong Kong and Vietnam and suits you if your strategy extends beyond South Asia.
