EIG offers an original design capacity of 3.84 Tbit/s across three fiber pairs, based on 10 Gbit/s DWDM technology. Since entering service in 2011, the system has been further developed through technical upgrades in 2015 and 2020 using 100 Gbit/s DWDM technology. This keeps EIG a capable system for the Europe-India route more than a decade after launch.
EIG has been in operation since February 2011. The cable system is operated by a consortium of international telecommunications companies, including BT, Verizon, Bharti Airtel and several regional carriers along the route. The system was built by TE SubCom and ASN, which each delivered different sections between Europe and India.

IMEWE is the shorter, more direct route between India and Western Europe.
