What is a WAN and why do businesses need one?

A WAN (Wide Area Network) connects a company’s sites across geographic distances — for example headquarters with branch offices, subsidiaries or data centres. It enables centralised IT applications, shared data storage and consistent security policies across all locations. Modern WAN technologies such as SD-WAN, MPLS or Ethernet also provide guaranteed bandwidth and SLAs. Without a WAN, each site would need to run its own IT systems and internet access in isolation.

What is the difference between SD-WAN and MPLS?

MPLS is a carrier-operated Layer 2/3 technology with guaranteed SLAs and excellent voice quality, but it is expensive and inflexible. SD-WAN is software-defined and uses multiple internet circuits in parallel (including fibre or LTE), offering centralised management and direct cloud access. SD-WAN is typically 30 to 60 percent cheaper than MPLS and far quicker to scale. For mission-critical real-time applications MPLS remains relevant, often combined with SD-WAN in a hybrid setup.

Which WAN technologies does SAVECALL offer?

How much does a corporate WAN cost?

Costs depend on bandwidth, number of sites, technology and SLAs. SD-WAN starts at around 200 euros per site per month, MPLS at 800 to 2,500 euros depending on bandwidth. Ethernet connections between data centres at 10 Gbps range from 1,500 to 4,000 euros per month. Dark Fibre is only economical at 10 Gbps and longer distances. How long does a WAN implementation take?

An SD-WAN rollout over existing internet circuits typically takes 4 to 8 weeks. New MPLS or Ethernet connections require 8 to 16 weeks because of carrier provisioning and possible civil works. International projects or Dark Fibre can take up to 6 months. SAVECALL handles full project management including carrier coordination, migration planning and cutover. A realistic timeline is part of our initial consultation.

How does SAVECALL guarantee WAN performance and availability?

We define Service Level Agreements with you for availability (typically 99.9 to 99.99 percent), latency, packet loss and mean time to repair.
