A joint project between Meta (Facebook), China Mobile, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, STC, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC, 2Africa aims to provide comprehensive digital access to the African continent and improve connectivity for over three billion people. 2Africa is a submarine cable spanning around 45,000 kilometers that fully encircles the African continent, connecting 33 countries in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, with the Pearls extension additionally reaching India, Pakistan and the Persian Gulf. 2Africa uses state-of-the-art fiber optic technology and is designed for a capacity of up to 180 Tbit/s, which exceeds the total capacity of all existing submarine cables around Africa many times over. Essentially, these are the technological features:

This mainly depends on the landing points and capacity you need. 2Africa offers by far the highest capacity and broadest country coverage in Africa, AAE-1 provides an established route since 2017 with direct interconnection to 2Africa, and Africa-1 offers an additional, physically separate alternative on the Middle East-Europe segment. Genuine redundancy only exists when the chosen cables use different landing points, operators and physically separate routes, for example combining 2Africa with AAE-1 or Africa-1. Since 2Africa is directly interconnected with AAE-1, companies relying solely on a combination of both systems should carefully examine the actual physical routing.
