The invisible infrastructure of global connectivity
The 2Africa submarine cable is one of the most ambitious cable projects in the world and will be the longest submarine cable system in the world when completed. A joint project between Meta (Facebook), China Mobile, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, STC, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC, 2Africa aims to provide comprehensive digital access to the African continent and improve connectivity for over three billion people. With landing points in 33 countries along the African coast and connections to Europe and Asia, 2Africa is setting new standards in digital connectivity in Africa. Submarine cables like 2Africa form the invisible foundation of global data traffic, with over 99% of international data flowing through them rather than through satellites or the cloud.
Route & connection
2Africa completely encircles the African continent, connecting West, East and South Africa with Europe in the North and the Middle East and Asia in the East. The cable reaches 33 countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt and many other African markets, as well as Portugal, France, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. With a total length of around 45,000 kilometers, 2Africa will be the longest submarine cable system in the world once it is completed.

Technology & capacity
2Africa uses state-of-the-art fiber optic technology and is designed for a capacity of up to 180 Tbit/s, which exceeds the total capacity of all existing submarine cables around Africa many times over. Essentially, these are the technological features:
- SDM (Space Division Multiplexing): 2Africa relies on state-of-the-art SDM technology, which enables significantly higher capacity per cable and secures Africa’s long-term bandwidth requirements.
- 33 landing points in Africa: The unprecedented coverage of the African continent with 33 direct landing points makes 2Africa the most comprehensive cable system for the digital development of Africa.
- The latest generation of fiber optic technology for minimal signal loss and stable transmission quality along the entire 45,000-kilometer route.
