Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) is a trans-Pacific submarine cable connecting Nedonna Beach, Oregon, US, with Chongming and Qingdao in China, Geoje in South Korea, Tanshui in Taiwan and, since a 2010 extension, Maruyama in Japan. The cable spans around 17,700 kilometers and entered service in September 2008. Across four fiber pairs, TPE reaches a design capacity of 5.12 Tbit/s. It is funded and operated by a consortium comprising AT&T, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, Korea Telecom, NTT and Verizon Business. At launch, TPE was only the second submarine cable to provide a direct connection between the US and China, and it remains an important alternative route to the usual detour via Japan.

At launch, TPE was only the second submarine cable providing a direct connection between the US and China.
This mainly depends on the capacity you need and the landing points required. TPE offers four established East Asian landing points on one route, New Cross Pacific provides significantly higher capacity on a similar route, and FASTER offers direct connectivity to two Japanese landing points and Taiwan. Combining an older, established system with a newer, higher-capacity one is often the better choice. SAVECALL advises on the right combination on a vendor-neutral basis.
Genuine redundancy only exists when the chosen cables use different landing points, operators and physically separate routes, for example combining TPE with a newer system like New Cross Pacific or FASTER. Since TPE is technically older, companies relying solely on TPE should also ensure sufficient capacity headroom.
