The invisible infrastructure of global connectivity

The PLCN (Pacific Light Cable Network) submarine cable is a trans-Pacific cable system that was intended to connect the USA directly to Hong Kong and was one of the first cable projects of its kind to become the focus of geopolitical discussions about data security and cable infrastructure. As a joint project between Google and the Chinese company Pacific Light Data Communication, PLCN became a symbol of the growing strategic importance of submarine cables in the area of conflict between economic interests and national security. Submarine cables such as PLCN form the invisible foundation of global data traffic, as over 99% of international data flows through them rather than through satellites or the cloud.

Route & connection

PLCN connects Los Angeles (USA) with Hong Kong as well as with the Philippines and Taiwan as additional landing points. While the direct connection to Hong Kong has not yet gone into operation for regulatory reasons, the sections to the Philippines and Taiwan are already in use. With a total length of around 12,800 kilometers, PLCN is one of the longer trans-Pacific cable systems and connects important economic areas in the Asia-Pacific region.
