MAREA is a transatlantic submarine cable connecting Virginia Beach in the US state of Virginia with Bilbao, Spain, spanning around 6,600 kilometers. The cable entered service in 2018 and reaches a capacity of up to 200 Tbit/s across eight fiber pairs. MAREA, Dunant or Grace Hopper: which cable is right for my business?

This mainly depends on the landing points you need. MAREA is a good fit for direct connectivity to Spain and onward to Southern Europe, Dunant offers a direct connection to France, and Grace Hopper combines the UK and Spain on a single route. Combining a southern and a more northerly system is often the better choice to achieve genuine redundancy. SAVECALL advises on the right combination on a vendor-neutral basis.

How do I plan redundancy on the North Atlantic route?

Genuine redundancy only exists when the chosen cables use different landing points, ownership models and physically separate routes, for example combining MAREA’s southern route with a more northerly system like Amitié. If you book two cables that share the Virginia Beach landing point, make sure the backhaul routes into the data center are also separate. SAVECALL plans these concepts independently of any single cable operator, with a focus on actual failover reliability.

How do I get access to capacity on MAREA?

Access to capacity on MAREA runs through direct wholesale partnerships with Telxius as operator, as well as IRU or leased capacity agreements.
