MAREA entered service in 2018 and was built by TE SubCom. The project was jointly funded by Meta and Microsoft, while day-to-day operations are run by Telefónica subsidiary Telxius. This combination of hyperscaler funding and classic carrier operation is characteristic of MAREA and sets it apart from fully private cables like Dunant or Grace Hopper.
This mainly depends on the landing points you need. MAREA is a good fit for direct connectivity to Spain and onward to Southern Europe, Dunant offers a direct connection to France, and Grace Hopper combines the UK and Spain on a single route. Combining a southern and a more northerly system is often the better choice to achieve genuine redundancy. SAVECALL advises on the right combination on a vendor-neutral basis.
Genuine redundancy only exists when the chosen cables use different landing points, ownership models and physically separate routes, for example combining MAREA’s southern route with a more northerly system like Amitié. If you book two cables that share the Virginia Beach landing point, make sure the backhaul routes into the data center are also separate.
