The invisible infrastructure of global connectivity

The MAREA submarine cable is one of the highest-capacity transatlantic cable systems in the world and a joint project between Microsoft and Facebook. As the first transatlantic cable to land directly on the Iberian Peninsula, MAREA opens up new opportunities for connecting Southern Europe, Africa and the Middle East to the North American market. Submarine cables such as MAREA form the invisible foundation of global data traffic, with over 99% of international data flowing through them rather than through satellites or the cloud.

Route & connection

MAREA connects Virginia Beach (USA) to Bilbao (Spain) and spans the North Atlantic on a more southerly route than many other transatlantic cable systems. The landing in Bilbao makes MAREA a strategically valuable cable for companies wishing to connect southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, Africa and the Middle East via further cable connections. With a total length of around 6,600 kilometers, MAREA is one of the shortest transatlantic cables.

Technology & capacity

MAREA uses state-of-the-art fiber optic technology and offers a capacity of up to 200 Tbit/s, which is achieved through the use of eight fiber pairs. Essentially, these are the technological features:

  1. Open Cable Design: MAREA is designed as an open cable system and enables users to use their own transmission technology and thus flexibly scale the capacity.
  2. Eight fiber pairs: The high number of fiber pairs forms the basis for the system’s enormous transmission capacities.
  3. The latest generation of fiber optic technology for minimal signal loss and stable transmission quality along the entire transatlantic route.

Provider Overview
