VPN restrictions in China
How companies should react to new requirements
China is increasingly restricting internet access. VPN tunnels, which were previously considered a solution, are increasingly being blocked, even for international companies with locations in China. Secure access to central systems is therefore at risk.
In a nutshell:
- Stricter control: VPN connections are subject to government regulation and can be blocked
- IPSec registration: companies can officially register connections and store keys
- Alternative MPLS lines: Direct carrier networks bypass the public Internet
- Reliable connection: point-to-point solutions ensure stable communication between locations
- SAVECALL Support: Direct access via China Telecom carrier backbone for maximum availability
SAVECALL offers secure and compliant solutions for companies that need to connect their sites despite Chinese VPN restrictions.

Support
For some time now, news has been accumulating that China is increasingly sealing itself off from the outside world and, in particular, is heavily regulating internet use. Many international servers such as those of facebook, Twitter and the like cannot be reached from China. VPN tunnels were a remedy here. It was possible to access the internet from a foreign server via a tunnel, and such services are now being shut down. This now also affects companies that operate branch offices in China and previously used an Internet line and a VPN tunnel to access the server at headquarters. They are now also being targeted by regulation and can no longer use these services. They will have to be replaced by more expensive MPLS networks or point-to-point connections.
VPN alternatives for companies
Even if it is still unclear how rigorously the Chinese government will continue to crack down on VPN access, it is advisable to be prepared. When using IPSec connections, it is possible to register them with the Chinese authorities and store keys. This should also be possible in the future. The use of MPLS connections is also still possible, as the data transfer takes place via the carrier backbone and not via the public Internet. As Savecall works together with China telecom, you have the option of purchasing and connecting data lines directly from your Chinese location to the carrier backbone.
