Ethernet Private Network

Ethernet Private Network (E-PN) offers any-to-any connectivity at Ethernet level. This means that the LANs in each branch office can communicate with every other branch office in the network via a logical any-to-any topology. The E-PN service is a Layer 2 VPN service with switching functionality implemented in the provider network. This allows any Internet frame entering the network at one location to be switched and forwarded to any other location.

Services at a glance:

The following can be offered:

This service is provided via a star topology, which means that all sites can communicate with each other without the need for additional switching or routing equipment. The service uses Ethernet via SDH or native Ethernet technology and ensures compliance with the guaranteed performance values. All interfaces are transparent to Layer 2 protocols. Each network has a fail-safe switching point that is set up at a provider node.

Features of an Ethernet Private Network

Topology & architecture of the Ethernet Private Network

SAVECALL Mobile communications tariff comparison - transparent overview and optimization of business mobile communications contracts for maximum cost efficiency.

Architecture & Topology

Ethernet Private Network offers customers network connectivity for multiple locations. E-PN corresponds to the MEF’s E-LAN definition for an Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC).

The physical architecture is a star topology that enables logical any-to-any communication.

  • Optimization possible through switch nodes close to the primary location
  • Primary location = hub point of most data streams or centrally located access point
  • Geographical location of the primary site determines the position of the switch node in the provider network

Switching & extensions

The network card for switching is installed at the provider node closest to the primary location specified in the order form. All E-PN access locations are routed via this switch location.

  • Up to three switching nodes possible with regional site concentration (Distributed E-PN)
  • Minimization of latency times in geographically separated networks
  • Multiplexed Ethernet UNI: several EP-LAN services per customer interface, separated via VLAN
  • This option is referred to as EVP-LAN

Tree topology (Root & Leaf)

Based on the MEF E-Tree definition, the E-PN service can also be implemented as an EP-Tree service (bidirectional point-to-multipoint EVC, Rooted Multipoint Ethernet Virtual Connection).

  • Root locations: Access to all other locations (Roots and Leaves)
  • Leaf locations: Access to root locations only

Several EP tree services per customer interface possible (Multiplexed Ethernet UNI, separated via VLAN). This option is referred to as EPP tree.
