Carrier Ethernet: Flexible, scalable and reliable

Carrier Ethernet is an Ethernet technology for data network operators (carriers). It can be provided as pure, conventional Ethernet, as well as via Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) or Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS).

Services at a glance:

When many small networks access a larger one, bandwidth bottlenecks can occur. Carrier Ethernet avoids these bottlenecks and can be easily configured for networks of any size. Its use in a MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) is called Metro Ethernet. Carrier Ethernet devices are now offered by almost all major network hardware manufacturers.

Evolution of Carrier Ethernet

Older technologies such as TDM and Frame Relay have largely disappeared. They have been replaced by Carrier Ethernet – but not every variant has been able to assert itself on the market. The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) in particular has driven development forward.

Ethernet has become the dominant technology in company networks. This leads to high production rates and therefore extremely low costs per bit. From the first copper coaxial cables, Ethernet has expanded to almost all media: copper, fiber optics and wireless transmissions.

Bit rates have increased tenfold: from Gigabit Ethernet to 10 Gbit/s in backbone LANs and even up to 100 Gbit/s since 2010/2011.
